Memory 10: Protecting Yuuki from a vampire
Memory goes here! Lasts to end of chapter.
What he learns?
- Yuuki tends to get dazed around vampires, even ones TRYING TO EAT HER. >_<
- Why is there a vampire in the alley anyway?
- Yuuki has a vampire weapon like him. Zero already knew this from Yuuki telling him about it in Aather. Her weapon is not as immediately fatal as his, when not in its scythe form.
- Unlike the Bloody Rose, Yuuki's weapon DOES NOT LIKE HIM. Possibly because he's a vampire and it's not linked to him the way Bloody Rose is. This depresses him greatly. Zero assumes this has to do with his original self's unwillingness to accept what he is.
- He actually acknowledges the vampire as a former human! Even though it's completely insane with bloodlust at this point. This bothers him in the memory. It is even more startling to Aather!Zero because it's the first time he can make a connection to his insanity in his previous memory of biting Kaname. The memory suggests that former humans cannot live as vampires. It also raises more questions about what this means for Yuuki, who is Juri's daughter and therefore a pureblood vampire, who shouldn't be human in the first place.
- Two Night Class students kill the vampire but refuse to stay and explain since Yuuki is wounded and her blood is tempting. He remembers secretly feeling the same way about Yuuki's injury.
-Takuma Ichijou and Senri Shiki.
What this means at Aather?
Obviously, this memory is going to awaken Zero's fears about his condition and about what he is since it's clear that in this case human-vampires can be very very bad. And Zero remembers feeling very much on the verge of insanity before when Kaname forced him to drink his blood. He is also much more convinced that drinking blood is NECESSARY to remain himself if there's any chance that he might become what he saw and while he won't stop taking the pills, they are now regarded as supplementary to him.
But this memory also introduces two contradictory elements in his own reluctance in killing the crazed vampire, something that goes against the vampire-hating self he's seen in his memories, and the intervention of the vampiric Night Class. That the Night Class both protected him and Yuuki and managed to leave Yuuki, despite their apparent temptation, contributes to his belief that not all vampires are evil and it is a matter of what they let themselves do. Or in the case of the human-vampire, what they can no longer control. He has also realized, for the first time, that his former self is not the cold killer he pretends to be and that much of his edge is a defense, probably because of the pain of losing his parents to Shizuka and believing Ichiru to be dead. It shows him he can front very well when he wants to. Zero might be using this method a little more often now, when he feels the situation calls for it.
